Several pics of the Academy Museum Gala, an “only-invited” restricted ceremony that aims to preserve the memory and advance knowledge about cinema as an universal art, were published on internet last sunday, October 16th. Its second annual edition took place the day before, saturday night, in Los Angeles, giving awards, celebrations and honorable mentions to great names in the cinematographic world. However, despite all the glam and deserved recognition of the seventh art, what made the headlines were some photos of two Popstars.
During the exclusive celebration, photographer Tyrell Hampton caught an unexpected moment between singer Selena Gomez and model Hailey Bieber (née Hailey Baldwin, daughter of famous director Stephen Baldwin), both entrepreneurs and promoters of female representativeness, but constantly placed as rivals in quarrels created among people involving singer Justin Bieber, Selena's ex-boyfriend and Hailey's current husband.
The images reveal them with near faces, arms around their waists and light smiles, typical of someone who’s comfortable with the company around them - or, at least, of grown-up women who respect and support each other, as it should. Other photos from the evening also catches Gomez and Ms. Bieber at the same table, hugging and having a friendly conversation.
Furthermore, the clicks came as a bonus of the indirect interaction that happened between Singer and Model in late September, when Hailey stated on US influencer Alex Cooper's "Call Her Daddy" podcast that she still suffers from rude and hateful comments coming from Selena's fans, many of whom, as she mentions, "just wish he [Justin Bieber] had ended up with the someone else [Selena Gomez].”
The main reason for the fans' harassment is the popular belief that Hailey "stole Justin Bieber from Selena". Both singers had an on-and-off relationship (which gave highly successful sounds for the music world, such as the tracks from "Revival" and "Purpose") between 2009 and 2018, when the Canadian artist made his engagement to Baldwin, a longtime friend, official.
As the over an hour long episode goes on, the model blows off about the certain numbness you get when married to someone so famous, often choosing to stay distant and neutral, immersed in her routine, to avoid coming into contact with offensive comments. She says:
“I have had this conversation with a therapist before. I hate comparison. The whole point of this conversation is we’re talking about how my relationship is being compared to something else or I’m being compared to another woman”.
In the end, Hailey made it clear that it's not on her or Selena Gomez (who at no point was directly mentioned on the show) character to promote conflict between women, statting that they respect and understand each other, wishing only that fans would do the same.
Then, the day after the podcast was released, the singer started a live stream on TikTok app to give a message to her fans: “I think some of the things that I don't even need to be aware of are just vile and disgusting. And it's not fair because no one ever should be spoken to in the manner that I've seen.'
Selena even brought up "Rare Beauty," her makeup line that promotes the individuality and comfort of every woman. She uttered that 'It's incredibly ironic that I would release something that is all about kind words because that's exactly what I want now. That's it. If you support Rare, I cannot thank you enough, but know that you are also representing what it means, and that is words matter. Truly matters."
Finally, after the Academy Museum Gala photos were released, an unidentified source told Entertainment Tonight that both Selena and Hailey were happy and super chill during their conversations at the event. They talked about it with “no drama" and “have both moved on and are happy in their own lives”, the source adds.
